In my post-wedding conversations with many of my couples I ask them if they have any regrets from the planning process or wedding and what they'd do differently if they could go back and do it all over again. 4 times out of 5 my clients will tell me they wished they had hired a videographer.
Now, if you are engaged you have probably heard these exact sentiments on the internet or from other wedding professionals and it may just sound like white noise or a ploy to scare you into hiring a videographer.
That's why I absolutely love the approach our guest blogger took to why you should make a videographer a must-have in your wedding budget.
I am excited to introduce Seattle wedding videographer Michael Poggenburg with Unified Cinematic! He's sharing some special moments that captured why hiring a videographer is so important.
There are, of course, numerous reasons why having a professional videographer at your wedding might be important to you. As a videographer myself, I make a point of trying to keep them memorized, and when I was asked to write this blog for Wedding Wise, I initially thought I would just list off a few of the most popular ones on the list.
There's the often-cited statistic that 98% of brides who didn't have a videographer at their wedding wished they had, according to one survey. And many times there are family members or friends who were unable to attend who will want to see the video. There are couples who want to be able to share the video with their children someday. And all of these are perfectly valid reasons to hire a videographer for your wedding. But is it something you need?
Let's face it - all you really need to get married is a judge and two witnesses, but unless you're having a courthouse wedding, chances are you've chosen to make your wedding something bigger because it's important to you. Isn't that the reason why we spend money at all on our weddings – because it's an important day? For most people, their wedding is the only time they will ever see that many friends and family members together in one place.
But what no one tells you is that after the rush of that day is over (and believe me, it will be a rush), so many of the tiny and important moments will be forgotten.
People choose to document their wedding with photographers and videographers because they want to remember it. Think about it – how many details do you remember from an important event that happened 20 years ago? Of course you can try to be present for all of it, but what I hear from brides most often when they first see their video is how much they had already forgotten, even just a few months later.
A wedding video is
an investment in memory.
So rather than tell you about these important moments that are worth remembering, I decided to share a few of them with you. Here are five of my favorite candid little moments that we've captured on video. Humorous, heart-warming, and truly authentic, these are the moments I love being able to share!
#5 Jenny and Clifford's Surprise First Look
This adorable moment was a surprise even to me! I had no idea that the bride wasn't planning on being part of the “real” first look. The look of surprise on Clifford's face, though, is one worth holding on to.
#4 Danny and Ivy's Difficult Jewelry
Danny and Ivy are struggling with their new wedding bands (that are maybe just a little too tight) when the Rabbi comes up with this terrific one-liner. Geez, how long has he been saving that one up?! Spontaneous jokes and moments like these might be quickly forgotten after the wedding.
#3 Sara and Andrew's Unofficial First Dance
Sara and Andrew are both great dancers, as I would later learn when they performed a choreographed swing number for their first dance several hours later. What I didn't know, however, was that when we snuck away under the willows to shoot this video, they would choose to start dancing together. This “unofficial” first dance, away from the wedding crowd, was in fact their very first dance as a married couple.
#2 Michelle and Matt's Uninvited Guests
When you hear someone say that an ant crashed their wedding, this isn't what comes to mind! What I love most is the flower girl's response – one of my favorite moments ever caught on film.
#1 Lindsey and Ryan's Maid of Honor Speech
It appears that crying, like yawning, is contagious at weddings. It's not uncommon for someone to pause mid-speech, but tears of joy are flying around the room in this clip! Important moments like these are forgotten without a videographer who can clearly capture the words of the day.
So there you have it. If these clips don't convince you of the importance of having a professional wedding videographer at your wedding, nothing will!

Thanks, Michael, for sharing these moments with us that would have been lost if not captured by video. Brides and grooms, I cannot urge you enough to heed Michael's advice and hire a videographer for your wedding! Invest in the memories of your wedding day so that you (plus your children and grandchildren!) can relive them and remember the special moments in between throughout your day.
